International Symposium
LATIN AMERICA IN THE PACIFIC RIM
【開催主旨・概要】
This symposium aims at analyzing the logic of regionalism and trans-Pacific (Latin America - Asia-Pacific) economic relations in the Pacific Rim emphasizing the role played by the Latin American side. This implies the examination of the interactions within the Pacific Rim, in particular the evaluation of the dynamics of institutionalized regionalism and the so-called “open regionalism” in Asia-Pacific, such as TPP and APEC, as well as the participation of Latin American countries in these trans-regional integration schemes. Similarly, the creation and development of the Pacific Alliance, a dynamic regional integration initiative whose member states are Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, is also a topic of this symposium.

Another goal of this event is a study of bilateral trade agreements subscribed between Latin American countries and their counterparts in East Asia and Oceania. Ambassadors from Latin American Countries will treat respectively the approaches to bilateral free trade agreements (FTAs) and economic partnership agreements (EPAs) currently existing (or under negotiation) in the Pacific Rim, the economic reasons that have led to the signing of these agreements and the results of those initiatives.

The Japan’s foreign policy toward Latin America and views of inter-regional and trans-regional processes taking place in the Pacific Rim will be also accounted for. The presence of Latin American countries in this processes, and the influence that such participation has on the current evolution of other regional initiatives developing in the Western Hemisphere, are topics of paramount importance in the study on the world’s most dynamic region within the context of international economic relations.
